Road trip!

Well, not exactly, more of a plane trip! Hushbear told me today that since the Spring semester doesn’t start until January 20th we can go to Australia! Yay!!!!

I think we will leave somewhere between the 5th & the 7th because whatever day you leave, you are there 2 days later because of the time change. We’re going to go to Melbourne first then on to Sydney again. I’d like to have a week in Melbourne just for vacation then a week in Sydney since hushbear will have to work while in Sydney.

We flew premium economy on Air New Zealand last time and it was worth it. It’s such a long flight that coach would just be miserable. This time that might not be an option. I’ve priced it and it’s from $1900 to $2600 for coach and from $5000 to $13,000 (yes that’s 13K) for premium economy. The 18 hour flight from Los Angeles turns into over 33 hours of travel time from Houston to Sydney! That’s insane!

I’m excited though, Sydney this January was so much fun. It was really relaxing and I can’t wait to go back. I found a few vrbo places which would be nice. We loved the one in Paris (we had the blue master bedroom). The hotel we stayed at last time we were in Sydney was really nice and had breakfast included. It wasn’t one of those go down and get stale bagels or cereal, it was a real breakfast, cooked to order if you wanted. It was nice not to have to go out for at least that one meal.

As much fun as Amsterdam, Brussels, & Paris were this summer (I went to the Panthéon and visited Voltaire’s tomb after an accidental climb to the top!) and London the year before, there was something about Australia that had me looking into the possibility of moving there. It helped that it’s so pretty and the weather was beautiful the entire time we were there!

I’ve booked my tickets to Michigan for Christmas. I leave on the 19th of December and return on the 27th of December (the day after the boy’s 7th birthday). Hopefully it will snow this year, we barely had any snow last year until the very end of my visit and that’s not any fun. I just don’t want snow on travel days!

I’ve never had a problem sharing

Honestly, I have no problem sharing, never had. I’ve noticed many people in my classes don’t want to let people copy their notes. They get all stressed out if someone asks them a question about exams or papers or basically anything.

I always share my notes. I record lectures and am more than willing to share those with people to. What harm does it do to me if someone else is able to get a better grade by using my notes or whatever? Today I almost rethought this.

In my Modern France class we have to write a vignette about some aspect of French history from the Franco-Prussian war to now. I think I have decided to write mine on the affaire des fîches. We were supposed to email the professor our topic to get it approved or have him help us narrow it down. Dr. Z liked that one the best out of the ones I chose and it lends itself to the vignette format very easily.

There is a guy in this class who irritated me today, he comes in late every single day. Today and last Thursday he sat down next to me. I noticed that he kept looking at my notes today. I didn’t think much about it but after class he was asking a few people what the vignette was -he wasn’t even aware that we had to have our topics turned in by Thursday. I gave him a topic which was something we covered in class both Tuesday & Thursday of last week and he had no idea what I was talking about.

He asked if we have anything else due soon and I told him that I think we have a test next Tuesday. He freaked out and asked me if I want to study. I told him sure because I figure it doesn’t hurt to study with someone else. Now I am regretting saying I would. I don’t think he wants to study with me as much as he wants me to give him the answers.

I know it’s stupid, but it kind of bothered me. I guess the joke is actually on him though because I don’t have any idea what will be on that exam!

The rest of this month is going to be rough. I have a French exam tomorrow, the Modern France exam next Tuesday, a paper due for Comp Rev the following Tuesday & another french exam that Thursday.

The upside is that I am no longer employed. It feels very strange not having a job. I told them I will fill in on certain days for a 1/2 shift, but no more than that. I feel like I’m not contributing anything. I know I wasn’t making much money before, but at least it was something.

Hurricane Ike sucks

Stuck in Dallas, not sure how long we will be here. My friend JH checked on our house. We have no fence, like the entire thing is gone. His girlfriend did point out that we do have a fence, it’s just not in the usual fence formation. It’s scattered all over our yard.

Apparently all of the power lines around our house are down and our neighbor’s tree is in the line that attaches to our house -cable & phone maybe? We are on a corner lot & the big pole in the back yard that the lines attach to is at a 30 degree angle and might be in our pool soon.

My best guess is that we will be in Dallas for another week. I am worried & want to get back to see the house, but hushbear can’t leave his guys here in Dallas.

I think that the new President of UH and her administration are doing a terrible job with post-hurricane management. I know they are trying to avoid make-up days but seriously, they aren’t saying if classes are canceled until the day before.

Houston is going to be under a curfew from dusk to dawn until Saturday. I think it would be safe to cancel classes for this entire week. The vast majority of the city does not have power and many people are without running water.

Students should not have to be concerned about potential absences. Even if they decide to excuse those days missed, those of us not able to go will have a disadvantage because we missed class.

…and on a lighter note, the genius that is Tina Fey:

Would you like fries with that?

This rant is dedicated to the motherfracker(s) that decided to introduce coupons into the pharmacy setting. Thanks for making us the fast food of the healthcare industry moron(s).

It’s coupon week! The week (or 3 months in the case of CVS) that all pharmacy employees dread. It means a bunch of extra work and lots of arguing over what constitutes new prescription and/or transferred prescriptions.

So, what is a new prescription? A new prescription is one that has been called in directly by your doctor (or doctor’s representative) or has been written -only by your doctor and presented to us to be filled. If you give me a new prescription and ask me to put it on hold that does not count. Yes, it’s a new prescription but you didn’t fill it. I am not giving you $10 because you gave me extra work assface. No, you cannot use the $10 gift card to pay for the prescription. No, I will not give you $10 on your refill because you threaten to leave. (Leave, less work for me and I won’t have to see your undoubtedly annoying ass anymore.)

Now on to an transferred prescription. Simply put, a transferred prescription is one that has been filled at another pharmacy and still has refills. We have to call the other pharmacy and move it to our pharmacy to fill it. This does not include new prescriptions called in by your doctor to our pharmacy. This does not include new prescriptions you have called into other pharmacies which we have to retrieve. Nice try, but that is a new prescription, it has not been filled.

Personally, I do not care if these people get $10 from my employer. Hell, they can afford it or they wouldn’t be doing it. It’s the people that abuse the system that annoy the crap out of me.

Transferring back and forth every month is actually quite dangerous. Every time you do this, you risk something being misunderstood. Many drugs sound alike, it’s really hard to distinguish them from one another. Strengths get confused, directions are taken or given incorrectly or some idiot intern from an inferior pharmacy school botched the entire transfer. We are as careful as we can be, but mistakes do happen and coupon weeks just add to our workload.

Highlights from my workday yesterday:

  • Coupon person comes in with 6 prescriptions, wants us to only fill the $4 generic drugs and call her later about the rest. We do as we are told and I think (I wasn’t really paying attention) that she told RPhGuy to transfer the one that wasn’t $4 -most likely to CVS for their damn $30 coupon. Note this was a new RX to us, if it was CVS, I hope the RPh doesn’t give her the $30 because their coupon specifically says transfers only.
  • Coupon person comes in with 3 prescriptions, only wants 2 one of which is a sleeping pill with a really high dose (Ambien 10mg BID) and is way too soon. Note in the computer from another store that she tries to get controls early.
  • Coupon person comes in with new RX but has never filled with us. RPhGuy has her fill out an information sheet, but of course she doesn’t have her insurance card. She tells RPhGuy that she always goes to Walgreens and didn’t bring it because they have it and she switched wallets or something like that. How one is related to the other is beyond me. She then says to him “You just call Walgreens and get it from them.”
  • Person that pissed me off the most is a habitual coupon person, works for a doctor and just gives herself and her mom new $4 generic prescriptions every time we have a coupon. She comes in to get her prescription and I don’t have anything for her. She says it was faxed in so I check the computer and see that she faxed it to another store. I told her that we hadn’t received any faxes or filled anything for her. She realizes she faxed it to another store and tells me that she has the hard copy in her car and can bring it in. I explained that since she faxed it to another store that is no longer a valid prescription. Blank stare so I explain that she is using the same prescription twice and that is fraud and we will not accept that from her. Suddenly she decides to go pick it up at the other store. I might ask RPhGuy to speak to the doctor to let him know what his staff is doing.

I know that there is more, but I need to start on my French homework since I have a 10 hours shift tomorrow and won’t get any homework done then.

Disappointment (and some shame)

I have a 6 year old half-brother (mom’s second marriage). He is obsessed with politics; during the 2004 election he had a Kerry-Edwards sticker on his big wheels tractor. Living in Michigan, he is also a democrat and proudly has his own Obama sign in his yard. He calls him Barackobama (all one word).

Today he asked me something that actually made me ashamed of the political system in this country. I told him that if he wanted me to, I could get him an Obama-Biden sign to go in the yard. He asked who Biden was and I explained that he’s Obama’s VP pick. Then he said this: “Sissy, is Joe Biden the one that tried to blow up the White House?”

I laughed and said I was fairly certain Biden had never tried that. I asked him why and he told me that Obama has a friend that tried to blow up the White House and he (Obama) is very proud of him. Completely confused I asked him where he heard that. He told me that it was on the TV.

I’m still not sure if it was an ad or if Fox News was somehow on, but I was floored. I told him that this is a very important election and that politics get dirty sometimes, and people will exaggerate things to make the other candidate look bad to the public. To be fair, I also told him that it’s not just Republicans that do it, that Democrats are guilty of it too.

Now I want to see this ad or segment. I want to see if they make it seem like Obama was helping Bill Ayres back in 1970. Let’s see, Obama was born in 61, so yeah, that seems about right. I think at 9 I was helping with plots to bomb the Pentagon too. I also think that I am responsible for everything that everyone I know did at any point in their life even before we met. Come on people, really?

I told the boy just to ignore those ads. He asked me of John McCain was the one putting the ads out. I explained that there are committees in charge of these things, but at the end it should say who put the ad out. That it may even say “I’m (Obama/McCain/etc.) and I approve this message. I stressed that he should just ignore the ads and go based on what he knew before he saw it. I should mention that the boy picked Obama on his own. His dad was an Obama supporter, but switched to Hillary but the boy stuck with Obama and even argued with his dad about it.

The whole thing just made me really sad and as I said, disappointed. We have a president who had a cocaine problem and a former president who couldn’t keep his freaking pants on and people are going after Obama for this connection? That’s just sad to me. Let’s focus on the issues at hand, the war, the economy, civil rights, stem-cell research, protection of Roe v. Wade, getting the troops where they should be instead of Iraq, McCain’s nutty VP choice, and leave this shit out of it.

Ok, off the soapbox now. Back to our regularly scheduled sarcasm. Next post will be about the useless intern TSU sent us.

Leaving Europe and the beginning of a new semester

I had a blast in Europe! Amsterdam was mostly boring, I think if you aren’t into drugs or hookers, Amsterdam is a little meh. We were walking around near our hotel and some girl was rubbing her goodies all over the window. After a moment of confusion, I noticed the red lights in the window. We didn’t get to go to the Van Gogh museum & the line outside the Anne Frank house was too long to wait, but hey -we went on a canal cruise, ate some really freaking good pancakes, and saw hookers through a window.

Brussels was so pretty. I had no idea how nice it would be. I wish we had taken a day off of Amsterdam and spent one more in Brussels. Oh well, if I’m ever in the area again I guess…

I loved Paris!!!! I seriously cannot wait to go back. It wasn’t as relaxing as Syndey, so that’s still #1 to me but Paris was awesome. We went to Versailles, I went to Voltaire’s tomb in the Panthéon and accidentally went up the stairs to the top (long story). We went to Notre Dame (but not to the top) and La Conciergerie where prisoners (including Marie Antoinette) awaited their trials during the revolution. I’m sure a lot of the historical stuff was boring to everyone else, but I had a lot of fun. Hushbear took a lot of pictures, but he is taking forever to put them up.

I really like my classes for the semester (for the moment) but French might be harder than I thought. The professor teaches it differently than any other language class I have taken. I took 3 years of Spanish in JR high/high school & 4 semesters in college. French is similar, but I keep pronouncing things like they would be in Spanish.

Of course I am looking forward to my class with Dr. S. I’ve been wanting to take it for 2 semesters. My Modern France class seems like it will be interesting as well. The professor started out with the French Revolution and since no one else in the class knows anything about it he kept calling on me. (eek!) I was able to answer most things, but I couldn’t remember when they changed the calendar and one other thing. I hate speaking in class. I’m getting better but I still don’t like it.

The biggest problem this semester is the location of my classes. They didn’t reserve a room for Modern France so we are stuck in the far corner of the campus in the engineering technology building. It takes more than 10 minutes to get there from one class & close to 15 to get from there to my next class on the other side of campus. By the time I get to my classes I am red in the face and all sweaty, it’s so attractive.

I have more reading than I realized I would. 21 required books & 4 optional ones. Any chance I am buying the optional ones? Hell to the no!

Seizurehead is back again…frack

I’ve been doing well for so long and now it’s baaaaaack! 😦

I am very happy to be on monotherapy, it’s a goal that many epileptics strive for and I have done quite well on just one drug. However, I switched from my wonder-drug (Lamictal) to the recently released generic. No bother right? I’ve switched from Tenormin to Atenolol & from Ortho-Tri-Cyclen to the generic du jour (thanks McKesson) without a problem. I work in a pharmacy I know that they are equivalent, I was actually excited about the generic coming out.

Yeah, not so much. I didn’t even just switch outright. I take two 100mg tablets twice daily (the 200mg ones are far to big). So I went with one brand and one generic at the same time for several days. That was just because I still had some of the brand and I wanted to make sure the transmission went smoothly.

Thursday was my first day on just the generic, so Friday made it my first full day. Friday morning I broke a bowl when I had a myoclonic jerk and the bowl fell on the floor. I finished getting ready and went to my internist only to be diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis (right before I leave for Europe). While in my amazing internist’s office, I managed to throw my phone across the floor. Luckily it only has a few scratches & isn’t damaged at least as far as I can tell.

I called my neurologist’s office and explained what was going on. The doctor had just left but his nurse called him and he actually returned my call himself in under 5 minutes. (I dare you to try calling your doctor for something; you’ll be lucky to get a call back from the nurse or lord help you the P.A. the next day.)

He told me to immediately switch back to the brand that obviously the generic wasn’t working for me for some reason and called in some emergency orally disintegrating Klonopin. (That drug stops the myoclonics and hopefully will stop a grand mal from occurring.) He was worried that the myoclonics were a precursor to the full grand mals and wanted to stop that if at all possible.

I missed my final exams which really is a pain in the ass. Now in addition to getting ready for Europe, I have to take those exams. The worst part about taking the exams late is that when this stuff happens my mind is even more of a sieve than usual. I just know I’m not going to do well on them. I would have just gone in to take them, but I was seriously worried about falling down on the floor convulsing.

Everyone thinks it’s so great that I get a few extra days to study for them, but it’s really not. With the Klonopin going through my system I can barely focus and can’t study at all. I’m afraid to stop taking the Klonopin because I don’t want the myoclonics to start back up.

Yes, this is a pity party thrown just for moi, but screw it. It’s my blog and the 3 of you who will actually read it have heard about most of this already.
